Plyo Yoga, A New Way To Move

If you’re like me, you’re always looking for more fun and innovative ways to workout. I’m a passionate yogi, cyclist and absolutely love to hike but I’m always up for trying something fun and new like the occasional kickboxing class or aerial yoga class. I also love to see new fitness genres created that marry the best of both worlds from two or more fitness genres. Today we take a closer look at Plyo Yoga. Ever heard of it? I’ll share my thoughts and some useful tips for helping you to incorporate this genre into your fitness regime today!

Plyometrics + Yoga = Plyo Yoga

What is Plyometrics?

Plyometric exercises are powerful aerobic exercises used to increase your speed, endurance, and strength. They require you to exert your muscles to their maximum potential in short periods of time. Think jumping jacks, squat jumps, burpees, etc. Plyometrics tone the entire body, burn calories, and improve cardiovascular health. They also boost your stamina and metabolism.

There are certainly many benefits to doing plyometric exercises. Since they require little to no equipment, they can be done anytime, anywhere. However, it’s important to make sure you have the strength, flexibility, and mobility to perform these exercises, especially in your ankles, knees, and hips. Core, lower back, and leg strength are also important. Many plyometric exercises are full-body exercises. They help tone the body by engaging lots of different muscles.

Why Plyo Yoga?

Yoga is actually a great counter balance to plyometric exercises. If you’re looking to mix things up and add some power to your yoga practice, this combo might be just what you’re looking for.

What we know is that it’s important to mix up your workout routines. You may be an avid runner but every runner needs to stretch. Or, vice versa. Maybe you’re a dedicated yogi who could benefit from adding a touch of intensity to your weekly flows.

Consider adding one workout a week of stretching, yoga or plyo yoga, even if it’s just a 20-30 min floor routine. Not only will you feel better, you’ll likely notice a difference in performance in your go-to workout regimes.

How To Incorporate At Home

There are streaming services and apps you can use to make doing Plyo Yoga at home fun and easy. All you need is a yoga mat and a semi ‘quiet’ place to practice and you’re good to go. Alo Moves offers (5), 30 min classes promising the perfect full-body workout. They offer a 14-day free trial and have LOADS of other amazing workouts all for $20/month.

You can also look at fitness apps that offer both plyometrics and yoga instruction such as Peloton. Connecting via your iPhone or iPad making it super easy to do from anywhere.

Another idea would be to make up your own routine. Familiarize yourself with the standard plyometrics moves. Jot them down. Find a 30 minute high-energy vinyasa flow class and in between sun salutations, hit pause, turn on some tunes and do those plyo moves. Just 2-3 minutes per set can really get that heart rate going. Rest and recovery happens when you move back to your flow. It’s just a fun way to mix things up!
